How Small Teams Can Create a Simple Information Security Policy
Information security policies are not only for large companies. Small teams also need simple rules for passwords, access, backups and data sharing.
An information security policy may sound like corporate bureaucracy, but small teams and freelancers also handle sensitive data: passwords, customer details, payment information, hosting accounts and business files.
The purpose is not to create paperwork. The purpose is to make sure everyone knows where information is stored, who has access to which systems and what should happen when something goes wrong.
Password management is the first topic. Shared passwords should not travel through chat messages. A password manager, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication provide a strong baseline.
Access control comes next. Not everyone needs access to everything. Designers, temporary collaborators and external partners should only receive the permissions required for their work, and those permissions should be removed when the work ends.
Backups are another core rule. Website files, databases, client documents and important internal files should be backed up regularly. A backup stored only on the same device is not enough.
Device security also matters. Updated systems, screen locks and basic protection tools reduce the risk of a single lost or infected device exposing business data.
For small teams, a good policy is short, clear and practical. It should be updated as the team, tools and workflows change.
